Hexigons and a Wall Hanging

This week I have spent my time finding fabric to make bedding for the little one on the way, as well as figuring out how the design will look. I decided to make the crib quilt in a Hexigon pattern and am still trying to decide if I want to do the "Grandmother's Flower Garden" pattern, a chevron look, or just a random whatever I pull out of the bag design. I have so far made 140 hexi's roughly, and I am not sure how many more I will need....guess I will start to sew some together and see how it goes. I think I will probably need a couple hundred more since it is a one inch pattern.

I finished putting a border around the hand embroidery I completed a few weeks ago for Lucie...I am going to look for a frame now and I may end up having to add a few more rings of fabric around the outside to make it fit in the frame properly....I am thinking of mking a matching one for Sara June and hanging them above the mirrors in their bathroom. (If they fit)

NO progress on the Aloha quilt this week....but I did order some needlepoint tapestry and Anchor Wool Tapestry Thread to start a bag project that will have hibiscus on it as well as the word "Aloha!"

Hangin' Out in my Hammock...

Hangin' out in the hammock...

There will be hibiscus flowers mixed into this greenery after I have completed quilting....They are 3D so they stick up and I don't want that getting hung up in my quilting!

I have made good progress over the past week on my Hawaii quilt. I am starting to add some of the last details, have squared it up, and added the outside border. Now I have to stitch everything down securely, and decide which areas will be part of the quilting and which parts will be aplique before quilting. I plan on doing a scrappy back out of various floral batiks that i have accumulated over the years, and have been quite proud to say that I have not purposefully or recently purchased any of the fabrics used here.....they have been accumulated over time! (so it kind feels like this quilt is free even though it's not, and we all know how expensive a craft such as this can get!) I ended up adding some details I had not planned to add, but that is what has made this so much more fun!

I have also started cutting out 1 inch hexi patterns..I am going to make the bedding and curtains for Sara June after I take a trip to the fabric store. I know you can buy these templates, but you can also make your own printable PDF grid paper right here:GRIDS I have in mind what I am kinda looking for, and hopefully with some luck I can find it! If not, then it's off to on-line shop! I am planning on flowers and dots (and the hexi's will be used on the crib quilt).  I did just recently buy my daughter Lucie new bedding from Pottery Barn Kids (this is the one I purchased), but I am planning to make the ruffle curtains, dust ruffle, and chair cover. So..that meant buying a ruffle foot! It's in the mail now....can't wait to get it and try it out! I had bought the CRAFTSY course on sewing texture in December when the class was half off...I can use some of the tips and tricks in there to use in her bedroom as well!

Work In Progress

This week I did complete my January BOM Lucky Star. I am happy with the way it turned out...just hope I can find some other small animal prints for the next months to come! I plan to do a different farm animal each month, then at the end put them all together and quilt the words to Old McDonald around the outside border for my daughter. She really likes it already, and I am thinkning about making the six inch block as a shirt applique for her to wear now in the same prints...just not sure the cow print will show up....

I also made Lucie a small doll that I am not sure whether to be proud of, or embarrased by, but none the less she seems to like it and we named her Summer. The hands and feet need work but this was kinda a fast project, and I know what I would do differenly now.

And this is what I was up to yesterday....Making a birthday outfit for a friend's daughter who has a circus theme this year. I hope that she likes it, I will be be delivering it tomorrow! I think it turned out good :0)

I made a good amount of progress on the hand embroidery project I am working on for Lucie....

And the biggest WIP of  all is the baby in my tummy! We found out today from the doctor that we will be having another girl and I am very excited! Her name will be Sara June....Sara after my Mom's Mom and June b/c we like it! I am already thinking of something to do with MYTRYOSHKA dolls (me, Lucie, and Sara June.. I have always loved those!)....That's all for this weeks Work In Progress....maybe next week I will be able to show some on the Hawaii Quilt!

Wednesday Work in Progress

I am amazed at all the things some of you fellow bloggers do out there in a week's time! I have been working this week on the Aloha quilt and have the background together kinda like I want it. I have to square it up and thread sketch around all of the mountains and the edges where I rough stitched everything together. I did not turn under any of these pieces, I just did a rough basting then a large zig zag stitch. I think I am going to work on that part next then start adding my little applique items on and the 3D flowers. I am happy with color choices, but I am not crazy about that seam where I joined the water together ....maybe with some thread sketching and quilting I can blend it in a bit.

This is a close up of the sky fabric...it has hibiscus flowers throughout...I thought the water fabric chosen looked like the sun shining down across the water with the yellow bits sprinkled throughout.

Hand Embroidery
Here is an embroidery project I am working on...I got the little girl pattern out of a book by Anna Maria Horner. Check out her blog it has lots of good stuff on it. It will be my daughter Lucie's name and either a pillow or framed when I am done.

                                         T-Shirt Quilt
I had a friend drop off all these t-shirts b/c she wanted a t-shirt quilt made! Maybe she will get more like three :0) I am going to try to make it front back so we will see where this goes...for now I need to sort them out and see what we're working with! Maybe sashing and borders on the front and on the back just shirts....

That's it for now...I better get busy! P.S. I looove the baby doll bedding found here: Baby Doll Crib Set I will have to definately make this for my daughter b/c I have almost the exact bed for her dolls too! I can make it match her bedding..

WIP -Aloha-

Ok so I am very excited to be starting this quilt ...I have been dreaming it up in my head for quite a while now so let's get to it! I am starting out by drawing a huge paper pattern, that will then be transfer to smaller freezer paper patterns, and the completed quilt will have pieced parts, turned under applique areas, thread sketching, maybe some hand embroidery, 3D flowers (not sure how this one will go but it will be trial and error), and in the end hopefully tell a story as well. It will be a travel quilt that will document not only a past trip to Hawaii, but also be taken with my husband and I when we go on our next trip to Hawaii......in MARCH...yes you heard that right....MARCH as in like 10 weeks (I have have a count down going on). It will be a small throw size, but I do plan on putting a lot of time into the project to make it unique, meaningful, beautiful, and most importantly one of a kind!

Fabric Choices...when looking at this picture I am thinking it looks drab....but I promise the colors are far from that! I picked out mainly batiks with a few other solids thrown in there. As time progresses hopefully it will become more clear the "master plan" (for you and for me!! haha)

The drawing started...minus the small appliques. Also, my 21 month daughter wanted to "draw" too....so there's her handiwork to the side! This is the ocean with a lagoon like look to it, with mountain range in back and beach in front. There will be greenery and flowers scattered along the right side as well as the left front corner.
